Conceived by ICONEM From 17 September 2020 to 31 January 2021
The Boghossian Foundation hosts its first immersive digital exhibition dedicated to Aleppo, the millennial city.
Since 2012, the battles of the Syrian civil war ravage the city of Aleppo. Bombardments and fighting on the ground took a heavy toll on the civilian population, but also on the material heritage. It is estimated that several hundred historic buildings were damaged or destroyed. Even today it is difficult to quantify what was lost in the destruction and what can be salvaged. Thanks to several field missions in 2017, Iconem’s teams, specialized in the digitization of endangered heritage, managed to establish 3D models of several major monuments in the Old City of Aleppo.
This work, in addition to virtually safeguarding this heritage and enabling remote analysis, makes the martyred remains of Syrian architecture accessible to the general public. Immersed in a slow stroll through the 3D models of Aleppo’s main monuments, the visitor is confronted in turn with the harshness of the damage inflicted on the historic heart of the city and the beauty of the remains of these monuments.

About ICONEM
Founded in 2013 by Yves Ubelmann, Iconem contributes to the conservation and promotion of endangered heritage, by digitalising it for further exploration and study. His team works across the globe, bringing together additional technologies in order to adapt to all terrains - using photogrammetry, laser scanning, and large-scale scanning via drones.
Executing 3D photorealist models of our heritage’s most precious sites helps both ensure their protection and communicate them to a larger audience. Over the past few years, Iconem has designed digital exhibions such as Cités millénaires, at the Arab World Institute, Paris, 2018 and From Mossoul to Palmyra, A Virtual Journey through the World’s Cultural Heritage, at Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, 2019.
These immersive experiences help give the public access to exceptional heritage sites.
