The EU-TUMO Convergence Center for Engineering and Applied Sciences

TUMO Labs and the Yerevan branch of the renowned, France-based School 42 offer free educational programs for students and young professionals over the age of 18 who want to explore and deepen their knowledge in the fields of engineering and technology.

TUMO Labs had begun its educational program a few months before the state of emergency was announced. Since then, previously launched projects have continued and been completed, in addition to several new projects. In collaboration with local and international IT companies, such as the Armenian branch of the German company Osensus, AOByte, the Healthcare Innovation Center, TeamViewer Armenia, the British-Armenian Viciniti and Garoon Tech, TUMO Labs has implemented projects centered around artificial intelligence, 3D programming and IoT (Internet of Things), as well as digitization of the healthcare sector and development of agricultural technology. In these projects, students create applications and programs while gaining up-to-date knowledge and skills necessary for the demands of the market.

"Engineering and applied science are among the most important factors in the formula for Armenia's medium term success, both in the region and globally. While software engineering remains a priority, it can no longer be the only basis for innovation. Active participation in international networks of biology, material science, precision engineering and other key technologies will allow us to create value, and that is the strategic direction adopted by the EU TUMO Convergence Center," says Pegor Papazian, Chief Development Officer of the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies."

The programming school 42 Yerevan is a big part of the EU TUMO Convergence Center. The first stage of its educational program will begin this year, with student selections set to take place before then. Over the past three months, more than 2,000 participants have applied to 42 Yerevan, of whom only 450 will advance to the practical qualifying round in September (with 150 successful participants selected to begin their studies). Thanks to its unique educational curriculum, 42 students become competitive programming professionals in about two years, with data from other centers around the world indicating that over 95% of 42 graduates find work in the IT sector within that same timeframe. 

Regardless of the pandemic work on the EU TUMO Convergence Center's building design continues. As a result of an international architecture competition, the design of the new center was awarded to the acclaimed, Netherlands-based design studio MVRDV. The center will become a hub of collaboration and will contain open, public spaces, as well as laboratories, conference halls, offices and commercial spaces. Construction on the center is set to begin in 2021.
